Robert, By any chance were these disk volumes CMS formatted before starting the Linux installation? If so, that is a known "no no." On 2.2 systems, the CMS formatting confuses dasdfmt just enough that it thinks the whole volume is formatted correctly, so it doesn't re-do the whole job, leaving it in an unusable state.
