Welcome aboard Heinrich! I can't speak for OS/390, but the installation process for z/VM boils down to a one page document that is designed for folks that are just beginning with z/VM or just want all of the defaults. I don't think the document is distributed anywhere, but a number of folks have use it and the word is that it is quite easy.
