Yes, we had problems when we didn't do this, in other words when we tried
to boot from a restored Linux image, it wouldn't! Its also best to make
sure all the Linux volumes are always offline to all other OS/390 systems
where they are defined, except when you close down Linux and the backup is
actually running. Then after the backup is finished, vary the volumes
offline again before you boot Linux.

Yes it is mandatory to have CDL format, which means you need the 2.4
kernel.
