One of the reasons that you should always use dedicated volumes for page space is because once it is used for paging it can not be removed easily. After you drain the volume VM will not write any pages to it. However you must wait until every page that has been written to the volume has been paged back in before the volume is free. An IPL will of free all the pages on the volume.
