Yes, you can. However, adding a new LPAR does require an outage since you
must do a Power-On-Restart. And, of course, you must assign it some main
storage, and dedicate some DASD to it. As you no doubt are already aware. Do
you have the CPU power to spare? Just asking.

Just a comment on my part. Before trying to install Linux on your IBM
mainframe, I'd strongly suggest that you get the company to give you a spare
PC and install the same Linux distribution on it before trying to install on
the mainframe. That's just to get some experience in installing Linux. This
is just my opinion.
