Marco, You're asking for conflicting things. "Advanced" and "stable" don't usually go together in software. One thing you're going to find in the Linux/390 arena is that releases are probably going to be much less frequent than with Intel Linux, for example. You're also not going to find downloadable .iso images, except for the Debian distribution.
The SuSE version that is on their FTP server is actually the last beta version of their SLES7 distribution. If you contact them and ask for a free evaluation copy, you'll get their GA code, but will be asked to not put it into production unless you buy the maintenance package for it. If you decide not to go to production, they will want you to return the software. Also, SuSE is due to come out with their SLES8 Real Soon Now (it was announced it would be ready in December of 2002). The Red Hat version is fairly current, if you look at the updates they've produced for it since it went GA. Check out http://linuxvm.org/ on the left hand side of the page for URLs for that, as well as all the other Linux/390 distributions. I would say that you'd probably do fine with any of them. Debian is a little more current, since they just went GA a few months ago. I'm going to get to playing with that one of these days now. If you prefer rpm to dpkg, then I would say try both SuSE and Red Hat and see what you think. It isn't that much extra work, and will allow you to get some direct experience to compare the two. I'm looking at some of the folder dates on the s390 directories on redhat.com and suse.com, and can't help to notice they they are relatively old. I realize that this is really just asking for your opinions: which Linux distrib is the most mature/advanced/stable on the s390 (in particular I want to run it within Hercules)? It would definitely be a bonus if some ISOs were avaialble! I typically go to www.cheapbytes.com to get them, but the s390 CDs don't seem to be the latest versions/betas. Marco
