John,

What I do is send a
       get linux-vm 0212
command to [EMAIL PROTECTED] every month (changing the file name, of
course) and pull down the entire archive. I have a complete set starting
from 9812. I grep through them to find what I'm looking for. Very fast,
and well worth the 54MB of disk space.

There's a project, grepmail (http://grepmail.sourceforge.net/) that may
significantly reduce the 54MB and still allow you to search, including
date limits, a compressed mail archive (which compression may actually
speed up searching if your I/O time is greater than decompressing). And,
of course, MHonArc (http://www.mhonarc.org/) for mail to HTML (but not
compressing AFAIK) conversion/searching.
