It is possible, but it's an insanely large amount of work, and
obviously, SuSE won't support it.

If all you're trying to do is preserve your application configuration,
then installing a 2nd guest and using tripwire or something like that to
compare your current guest against the basic install might be the
quickest way to identify what's changed and preserve those files from
the old guest.

Consider it similar to changing major releases of VM or Z/OS. It's about
the same problem, with less support and documentation. I wouldn't try it
for anything that mattered.
