it could be that you are logon on the linux vm console and the messages from the 
formatting process are blocking your linux if you don't type Pause to scroll down and 
get rid of them.

Look at /var/log/messages

Dasdfmt produce messages like "formatting xxxx cylinder"

How long after 'Finshed formatting the device' on a 'dasdfmt -n 0D18 -b
4096 -l L40D18' command should dasdfmt be sticking around waiting to
return
to the shell?

It's been easily 2 hours since the message was issued. The time parameter
keeps going up on the ps -r display and top shows the tasks at least using
variable rates of CPU.

Just curious as to what it's doing after 'Finishing formatting the device'
is seen
