An e-mail I received reminded me that I hadn't responded and thanked everyone
for their input.

So, thanks to everyone.

I was surprised by the level of discussion that my question started.
Unfortunately for us, at present we are not going to run NTP nor will we get the
time to look into the root cause. We will probably just go with some sort of
daily time update from a local time server or something. Since the time doesn't
skew that much in a day, that will probably work at least for now.
