I'm wondering what is causing you to upgrade your kernel. Any particular
reason?
You need to keep in mind that SuSE, like most Linux distributions, has
SuSE-specific patches that go into the kernel they ship. If you're going
to
build your own, you will want to try to preserve those patches to make sure
you don't break something else in your system that expects them to be
there.
I just went through that process, and I can tell you it's no fun, even for
a
confirmed bit head like me. If you have a support contract from SuSE, you
should be able to get whatever is the current kernel they support and ship.
If the error you're getting during DB2 setup is this:
./db2inst:error while loading shared libraries:
libstdc++libc6.1-2.so.3:cannot load shared object file:No such file or
directory
then you probably need to install the gppshare RPM. It should be on CD1.
There will also be an updated version on CD3.

I have Suse Linux(SLES 7) install with a 2.4.7 kernel. I want to know if I
can use the May stream to upgrade to 2.4.19 or must I apply the August
stream. The doc says 2.4.17 and 2.4.7 are functionally equivalent. The
second part of my questions is about the DB2 trial. I downloaded and tarred
the file, but when I ran the ./db2setup it can't find the libc 6.x
libraries. I installed almost everything available from the SUSE site, but
can't find these. Any suggestions?
