I had done that previously (see ZIPL Dased and Confused) but here goes:
Installed from initdrd supplied on patch/maint CD for SuSE 7.2 (2.4.7 kern)
and was able to get dasdfmt to work.
Used fdasd to create CDL formatted volumes.
I have 4 3390-9's and 4 3390 custom volumes (In a shark, non PAV. Sysprog
says 3390-3 layout). The custom volumes are a tad more than a gigabyte
each. I had used one as swap. I have 1 gig of memory allocated and 1 CP on
a 9672 R26. I am running in LPAR mode.
when I attempted to IPL (Evidence of ZIPL being run by yast was available)
the process went forward as expected, until it started to do partition
checking. That produced the following:
Partition Check:
dasda:VOL1/ L40D1C : dasda dasda1
dasdb:VOL1/ L40D18: dasdb
I labeled the devices with a mnemonic of L4 for Linux LPAR 4 (even # Lpar's
are on the R26, odd on the Z900) and the volume. Ergo, dasdb, L40D18 is my
IPL volume, and dasda, L40D1C is my swap volume. The swap volume is a
3390-3 custom volume. the IPL volume, is a 3390-9. The check appears to
halt at the first mod-9 device. A short time later the message <7>
dasd_erp(3990): /dev/dasdb(94:4), od18@0x2f6: Perform logging requested
appears. LPAR then just sits idle. No unexpected wait state, etc.
The LPAR is inaccessible and does not respond to HMC fed commands at this
point.
Based on descriptions of the 3390-9 problem in this release of SuSE 2.4, I
am strongly convinced that the problem is indeed the 3390-9 CDL patch I've
heard about.
My problem is that I have no running system SuSE 2.4, and cannot therefore
use yast2 as supplied on the maint CD to apply said patches.
The question then really is how do I apply the maintenance that I have to a
system I cannot IPL but whose dasd I can mount in the initial ramdisk
system used for install?
I could install a contracted system, bare minimum, on the 4 custom volumes,
and probably come up. I could also install a base system in non-CDL format
on the existing dasd. I also have an identical quantity of dasd on a second
shark defined to this same LPAR. It is because we are migrating to a new
shark. Our existing dasd box has issues where it occasionally eats a disk
and we have to use a hot spare to stay running. It's done this like a dozen
times in the last year. IBM wants to cart it back to the lab and see why.

OK, one step at a time....................
Tell us in detail what you HAVE done to install Linux...... (GIVE DETAILS)
and get answers......just like a good patient....
Tell us your configuration, cpu, storage, #disks & Types.... all the
stuff.... then we can assist.... don't be vague.....
