That's most likely the case. Making sure security failure auditing is turned on will result in the errors being logged. Going into "event viewer" will then reveal what information was being passed to the Windows system. If you set up your Samba system as being in the same workgroup as the Windows systems, then passing the additional parameter is not needed. Because some Windows domain designs put machines into one workgroup/domain name, and people in another, that can create the need to always specify the workgroup parameter.
