Another alternative is EVMS, which is compatible with LVM but also
integrates management of RAID volumes, disk partitioning, and other features
from a unified interface.

EVMS, like LVM2, requires a patch to the 2.4 kernel in order to work.  In
future stable kernels, both will use the standard device-mapper interface
and should not require a patch.

Plain LVM and RAID-linear are both available in stock 2.4 kernels for this
purpose.
