I have found Levanta to be an extremely beneficial product that is sophisticated yet easy to use. The component they refer to as the "union file system" provides the ability to achieve both DASD sharing and instance independence. We spent a couple of weeks learning the product and planning our environment and are now able to create unique instances (ie, separate /etc and /var) that share packages. It takes us only 2-3 minutes to create an instance.
There are, however, a few weaknesses to the product. The most serious of which is that Levanta currently only manages packages that are packaged in standard RPM format. This is a major weakness, yet is scheduled to be resolved in their summer release of the product. The innovative architecture of Levanta will clearly be the cornerstone of our Linux/390 environment.
