Richard,

You're not going to like this, but here goes anyway...

There have been a lot of improvements in the gcc compiler since the SuSE 7.0
days. I've run into a number of instances where gcc 3.x or higher was
needed, as well as glibc 2.2.x. If you're seeing segmentation faults like
that, I would say you should look at upgrading your development tools:
binutils
gcc
glibc
etc.

It's a lot of work, so you may want to consider going to SLES8, since
they've already done all the work for you.

Subject: PostgreSQL 7.3.2 on SuSE 2.2.16

Hello list,
We are still running SuSE 2.2.16 for VM, it's worked fine for our
purpsoses so far. Have a user that has installed and built PostgreSQL
7.3.2 on his box, postmaster starts but he can not connect to the
database. Psql and createdb programs are both abending with a
"segmentation fault". We have a trace from the debugger if needed for
assistance. The last version he got to work was 7.2.4 .

Thanks,
