Richard, You're not going to like this, but here goes anyway...
There have been a lot of improvements in the gcc compiler since the SuSE 7.0 days. I've run into a number of instances where gcc 3.x or higher was needed, as well as glibc 2.2.x. If you're seeing segmentation faults like that, I would say you should look at upgrading your development tools: binutils gcc glibc etc. It's a lot of work, so you may want to consider going to SLES8, since they've already done all the work for you.
