I've always done the WebSphere 4.0.n installation from a Linux workstation
with X and SSH into the z/linux box, so I was able to use the clickey X
installer thing. You will want to have that set up to run the admin console
from anyway, unless there is some kind of command line admin tool I'm not
aware of.

When I installed that way it automatically installed the IBM JDK
1.3.mumble at the right time.

I'm doing a silent install.

        ./install.sh -options /RESPONSEFILE.TXT

Before JRE was installed on my instance I get the following errors.

        InstallShield Wizard

        Initializing InstallShield Wizard...

        Searching for Java(tm) Virtual Machine...
        ...............................No matching JVM was found.

After JRE was installed I don't get these errors.

I would think that WAS probably does include a JRE somewhere. IBM should
simply install that first and then proceed with WAS install.
