Compiling packages for Linux/390 seems to fall into two groups:
1. The kind you mention
2. The kind that makes you want to kill the developers

Most of the type-1 packages were compiled for Linux/390 long ago. I seem to
run into a lot of type-2 packages as a result.

Yes and no. Building from source doesn't make you a developer - but it does
make
you much more aware of what goes on in your system though :-)
To a lot of people "build from source" == "./configure && make && make
install" .
