On a typical linux system scripts all scripts are run by bash . Thus the
Xsession script that sources .xinitrc has previously sourced .bashrc .

Some people are known to work with tcsh or zsh, though...

Just a note: it is generally a good idea to use ~/.Xclients rather than
.xinitrc . This way you use the standard system Xsession scripts, that
setup keyboard and some other useful stuff.
