Well, Windows only comes with a telnet client (though not a very good one). This pretty much obligates you to install e.g. putty on Windows machines in order to communicate with sshd. So ubiquity is probably telnet's outstanding "redeeming feature". Also, I guess some governments still don't like encryption, and the last I knew packet radio didn't allow it. -- David Andrews A.
