Managing Multiple LINUX
Linux for S/390: Systems Management for the Mainframe Systems Programmer
Speaker: Mark Post

More and more, mainframe systems programmers are being asked to install and
manage Linux/390. They have years of experience in installing and managing
'traditional' IBM mainframe operating systems such as MVS and VM, but they
don't know where to start with Linux/390. Installation is covered by other
sessions, so this one will concentrate instead on 'translating' typical
system management tasks to the Linux/390 environment by comparing and
contrasting the familiar with the new.

Linux on zSeries - What's new?
Speaker: Klaus Bergmann, IBM Boeblingen

Linux on zSeries went open source over 3 years ago. Performance and stability
have improved at a rapid pace, and many new functions were added to the
platform. What are these improvements and new features ? This presentation gives
you a technical overview about this new Linux on zSeries functionality.
The following features will be presented in this session:
-SCSI
-OSA Enhancements
-LVM
-Snipl
-VLAN / IPv6
-Lcrash
-HiperSockets
The Linux on zSeries features above will be presented along with examples how to
use them in your daily work.

Linux on zSeries Performance Update
Speaker: Klaus Bergmann, IBM Boeblingen

This presentation gives an introduction into general aspects of zSeries
hardware. It then focuses on specific Linux on zSeries performance topics.
The IBM Boeblingen Linux performance team worked on:
     Linux on zSeries scalability
Microbenchmarks evaluating the processor subsystem (e.g. memory bandwidth
and latency, process creation and context switch overhead)
Networking performance using Gigabit Ethernet and HiperSockets
     DASD performance
     SCSI attachments
The results of this work will be presented along with useful hints and tips to
optimally exploit the capabilities of Linux on zSeries.

New news about Linux on zSeries Speaker:
Dr. Klaus Goebel, IBM Boeblingen

There have been many significant Linux related announcements since WAVV 2002
from IBM, ISVs and Linux distribution partners. Things are changing fast as IBM
expands its commitment to Linux. This session will provide an overview of new
products and services for Linux on zSeries.

Connecting to Linux for zSeries
Speaker: Alan Altmark, IBM Endicott

Alan Altmark, IBM, will provide detailed information how to integrate Linux for
zSeries into your IP network. He will show you how to configure LCS, OSA
Express (QDIO), zSeries HiperSockets, Channel-to-Channel, and IUCV connections.
Special emphasis is given to the z/VM environment, IP address assignment, and
routing considerations.

Linux for S/390 Installation Hands-on Workshop Part 1&2
Speakers: Richard Lewis and Chuck Morse, IBM WSC

Linux for S/390 has generated a lot of excitement among S/390 customers.
However, for many this is a new and strange environment. This workshop will
provide an opportunity to install and configure Linux for S/390 in a z/VM
virtual machine. The hands on portion of this workshop will be self-paced, and
result in a running Linux for S/390 system and (optionally) the Apache web
server, Samba, a Domain Name Server (BIND-8), a firewall and the KDE desktop.
The goal is to equip each attendee with the skills required to return home and
install Linux for S/390 using the distributions from SuSe or RedHat, or the
binary objects available for download from the Marist College web site. (You are
welcome to stay and work on your installation into the evening hours, or until
the food and drinks are gone at Splash).

Measuring and Tuning LINUX on VM

Performance data now exists that allows you to manage your Linux
server performance. Using this data also helps you plan platform
changes such as moving workloads from an Intel platform to an
S/390 platform.

Managing Linux performance on an S/390 under z/VM with shared memory,
shared processor and even shared DASD provides a different set
of challenges as compared to managing performance for dedicated
Intel servers.

This presentation will look at some Linux performance issues
and technology used to analyze and manage Linux
performance - either for dedicated servers or under VM.

The author has worked with VM performance for 20 years, and
is the author of performance tools for VM, Network and Linux,
and is well versed in how to apply performance data to real problems.

Securing Linux for S/390 - User Experiences

Before placing Linux applications into production, most sites require that the
platform be proven to be a secure environment. Find out how other sites are
securing their Linux zSeries systems and meeting management (and auditors)
requirements. The speaker, having worked with several mainframe Linux clients,
will relate their experiences on how they have secured their Linux systems,
interfaced them with their existing mainframe and distributed security solutions.

A Windows User Moves to Linux Speaker:

Laura Knapp, IBM
We all keep hearing that the penguins have more fun! But we are familiar with
our Windows world and have lots of applications that run on Windows. How do we
ever make the move to the world of Linux? This session takes a look at Linux
from the view of a Windows user. Basic terminology and functions will be
covered along with how to get Windows applications to run on the your Linux
desktop! Come have some fun and begin to play with all the penguins of the world.
By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
1. Understand different terms used in Linux from Windows.
2. Know the various ways to get Windows applications to run on Linux.
3. Begin to explore the world of Linux with a background to build upon.

Linux for S/390 - Backing up your Data Speaker:

With the move toward "data clumping", some clients are moving their UNIX
applications to Linux on the zSeries and S/390 for reliability, scalability and
performance. Find out how you can backup that data using BrightStor backup
solutions and track tapes through the BrightStor VM tape management solutions.
