Thanks for the info, and to all of those who replied to this thread. Mathieu's post
quoted below sure makes me think. How much does RedHat support cost now? I had a
meeting with a couple people from our IBM business partner, who said he thought that
RedHat support cost about $30,000 per year. I hadn't ever really heard a price for
Redhat support before. Is that in the ball park? My boss was in the same meeting and
mentioned his favorite Linux line, "for a free operating system, by the time you add
and IFL, VM, support, etc., you've spent a lot of money".

I may have to rethink the distro that we should use. I currently have the RedHat 7.2
s/390 distro as an evaluation copy. By the way, someone posted the GNU free software
philosophy link. I read that yesterday and sent the link to my boss. I'll have to
ask him if he read it yet.

By the way, I am not against paying for support, and I feel that RH, Susa, etc. should
get compensated for their efforts, and if they don't, they go out of business. I just
realize that our budget will not take big increases. Over the last couple of years,
several people have been cut for economic reasons. If Linux is to succeed here at
P&H, any costs for software, hardware, and support will have to be offset by savings
in getting rid of servers. The servers we have are mostly paid for, and not a heavy
expense, however many are reaching the end of their useful life and will have to be
replaced.

Yes, the next official release for S/390 will be Red Hat Advanced Server
3.0 and you are obliged to take the support contract of RH.

I Think it's time to move to DEBIAN S/390 ?

What do you think ?

There is no more Free software for S/390 in RH and Suse
