Or install Mike Kershaw's bootshell program which will get you where you want to go without recompiling the kernel. Then, when you get SLES8 in house, you can change your automation from "CP SEND HALT" to "CP SIGNAL SHUTDOWN", update your /etc/inittab, and be ready to go.
