Roy, I suspect that the 2.2.16 version of SuSE was using NFS V2, and the newer ones are using V3. If the z/VM system is expecting version 2, and getting version 3 protocol stuff, it might throw up errors similar to what you're seeing. You might be able to turn of V3 support in the Linux/390 system.
