me worry?" (I hope I didn't violate a trademark for MAD magazine<G>)

As a long-time reader of MAD (the only thing that kept me same through graduate
school) I can tell you you didn't violate any copyrights. There aren't any.

The Alfred E. Neuman character (just his face, not his name) and the "what, me worry?"
phrase were used in 1902 by a soft-drink company,and probably were not, in fact, the
originators of the whole thing. MAD started using it in the 1950's after it had been
bandied around for decades for several other products. The original company sued E.C.
comix for trademark infringement, but because of the other products that had used it,
the judge ruled that the soft-drink company had not protected its copyright vigorously
and had abandoned it. Alfred's face and whatmeworry have been declared to be in the
public domain.

 Interestlingly enough, the "Alfred E. Neuman" name, however, was invented by William
M. Gaines, Jr. and is copyrighted by MAD. So you can use the face (as long as you
don't use someone else's artwork) and the phrase, just not the name.

I'm always amazed at the range of intellectual (?) topics you can find on this list.
On-topic or not.
