I know there were early SLES8 NFS problems, fixed by subsequent patches.
Try putting on SP2 and see if the problem goes away ;-)

We just bumped into what appears to be a kernel problem in SuSE SLES8 that
goes up to their latest package.
If I have an NFS mounted directory, and it contains a symbolic link that
points to itself, when I issue an 'ls' command, I get a series of kernel
errors on the console, and the system either loops or
crashes.
Can anyone else confirm this? I've opened an issue with SuSE. If it turns
out to be a real problem, I thought the list should be aware of it.
