The only way to know for sure would be to create a test program and try it.
Having said that: Java seems much faster on my little Pentium 2 400 than it does on our z900 under z/OS 1.3 at 480 mips (two processors). Both are with Java 1.3.1. I have not really done a benchmark, but Java programs definitely start up faster, and finish sooner on the P2. -----Original Message----- From: John D Cassidy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 23, 2003 9:07 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Performance question Hello all, a customer of mine in Germany is faced with a choice: Run a Webserver on a MS NT/W2K platform (Websphere) or the same, but on a z/Linux platform running under z/VM (IFL). The application is (will be) CPU intensive with extensive Java usage. I do not have MIPS rating for the IFL engine. I am hearing a lot of "it will run better on the MS/Intel platform because the application will be CPU bound" ... etc. Could anyone give me a "rule of thumb" as to what would be the performance considerations vis a vis the two platforms.
