[cross-posted on VMESA-L and LINUX-390]

No, this one's not a plea for session chairs (though we do need those, that's Martha's
purview). This note is an invitation to attend. With the recent announcement of z/VM
4.4.0 (its general availability is scheduled for 15 August, the last day of SHARE) and
the unprecedented rapid adoption of Linux on the mainframe, this SHARE meeting
provides an excellent opportunity to acquire valuable, timely information on these
topics. We've constructed a full week of sessions that are chock full of "good
stuff." This includes a Sunday Seminar, "Running z/VM to Host Linux -- Installation
and Customization," a hands-on opportunity to WATCH and DO the installation and
customization of a z/VM system and to bring up Linux "virtual servers."

For information about registration and hotel options, the Sunday Seminar, and the
details of the technical program, go to http://www.share.org/dc . Hope to see you in
DC.

The Linux & VM Program will have four formal tracks of sessions, two in VM, two in
Linux:

If you're finding yourself thrust into the VM arena for the first time -- or for the
first time in a long time, then the "New on z/VM" track is for you. Its 15 sessions
contain the practical information that a new VMer needs. These include the following
sessions of special note:

9120/1 Introduction to VM Hands On Lab (2 parts)
 9101 z/VM Show and Tell
 9203 Getting Started with z/VM TCP/IP
 9210 Introduction to VMSES/E for z/VM
 9221 TRACK for VM - A SysProg Must-have Tool!
9261 Configuring, Customizing and Modifying Your VM System Without an IPL

For the more experienced VMer, we have the "z/VM Systems Programming" track. When I
asked the manager of the VM Project, Jim Vincent, to select some key sessions from
this track for special mention, he responded

"it is IMHO hard to pick a few out that could highlight what the track is about,
especially the SysProg track. With that track you can look at it in a
number of ways: basic sysprog (maintenance/service), hard-core sysprog
(HCD, dynamic I/O, etc), internals, performance, tools and utilities."

The track comprises 25 sessions for VM systems programmers at all levels of experience.

For Linux, the two tracks are a general, platform-independent Linux track and a more
specific "Linux for zSeries" track. The general Linux track comprises 19 sessions
including the following:

9310 IBM Linux Strategy - Executive Overview
9321 File Serving Solutions Using Samba
9323 Directory Serving Solutions using OpenLDAP
9325 Print Serving Solutions Using Samba and CUPS
9349 Penguins Learning to Fly: Linux at Air New Zealand
9382/3/4 Linux InstallFest Lab (3 parts)
9311 Open Source: The Business Case
9380/1 Linux 101 Hands On Lab (2 parts)

The Linux for zSeries track comprises 44 sessions (!) including the following of
special note:

9317 Improving Time to Market Using Linux on zSeries
9326 Customer Experiences: Oracle9i Database on Linux for IBM's zSeries
9350/1/2 Linux for S/390 Installation Hands On Lab (3 parts) (repeated as 9353/4/5)
9343 Managing a Penguin Farm on the VM Prairie
 9391 Large Scale Linux
9322 Application Debugging Techniques on Linux for zSeries

As mentioned in a note a couple of weeks ago (on Friday, 30 May, to be specific),
there is a Sunday Seminar the day before the SHARE conference actually begins that is
focused on installing and customizing z/VM as a platform for running Linux guests.
That note pointed out that there would be sessions throughout the SHARE week that
would "pursue in more depth the topics covered in the seminar." These sessions
include, but are not limited to, the following:

 9203 Getting Started with z/VM TCP/IP
9209 VM Networking Overview: RSCS and TCP/IP
9261 Configuring, Customizing and Modifying Your VM System Without an IPL
9332 Managing Linux Using "Hidden" Tools in z/VM
9334 Managing Multiple Linux Instances on VM
 9345 Linux for S/390 in Production : A User's Experience
9346 Linux for S/390: System Management for the Mainframe System Programmer - Part 1
of 2
9347 Linux for S/390: System Management for the Mainframe System Programmer - Part 2
of 2
9356 Connecting to Linux for zSeries

As you can see, there's a wealth of VM and Linux information available for you at
SHARE in D.C. Register now!
