The systat package is point to disk in the .c files. I wonder is the
source would need to be changed to reflect dasd instead of disc? Any
ideas...

Yeah, I sure do.

Yep, empty io line in /proc/stat in 2.4.21.  Nothin' from sar -b or
iostat.  I suspect the DASD drivers need to be modified to put
statistics into /proc/stat.
