Actioally, "reload" should have been enough. Though restarting an ssh
server is generally a safe operation as it does not kill the existing
connections.

rebooting is not going to help in such issues. It only serves to kill
your existing shells that ould have executed commands (such as changing
root's password)

The obvious question, first: Have you verified that you got root's
password right?

sshd and su don't share configuration. su's authentication is
configured almost exclusively through pam. Take a look at /etc/pam.d/su
ssh only uses pam after it has tried a number of other authntication
metheds. It also imposes its own limitations independently.

BTW: not only do you have posts without proper threading (that's the
problem of the mailer), this message also comes without any subject.
And thus you don't give the minimal help to people to put this message
within the discussion context (thread).

(MeThinks: how nice to have a mailer that allows me to edit the
