What you're describing is a diesel-electric locomotive (as Gregg
observed). Diesel-mechanical locomotives do (did?) exist, and they indeed
were just a diesel engine driving the wheels directly (via gearing,
obviously). ISTR diesel-hydraulic also...

The old Queensland Government Railways (now QR) ran a passenger conveyance
known simply as the "rail-motor". It was basically a diesel bus on rails:
complete with hydraulically-actuated gearbox. I'm sure other rail
operators ran similar equipment.
