A mate and I have just been playing these past couple of days with the
vnc suite (part of your linux distro, I think).

It gives full desktop access, and can do so over ssh.

We had much fun typing at each other in a text-editor, running browsers
and The Gimp to show each others pictures, including that furry russian
penguin.

According to the docs, client and servers can be Windows and Unix in any
combination.

There's even a single-floppy client here
http://www.renyi.hu/~ekho/lowlife/

Ideal for that 386;-)

For running a 3270 emulator, a 386 portable would probably be fine;-)).

Using the techniques of the lowlife project, it should also be possible
to put together a small-footprint system running Linux, ssh and c3270.
