I'm not sure it will work. One gotcha: # PRE="cut -b 1-72 | sed -e s/\ \*\$//" If this were't remmed out, you probably have had a non-functioning script. Consider: cmd='ls |head' $cmd The result will be: ls: |head: No such file or directory The problem is bash's expantion order.
