John,

There are several things you'll need to do.
1. Install an X server on your Windows system. This can be obtained from a
number of sources, some free, some not. The Cygwin suite provides a free
one. Others can be had from StarNet Communications, Exceed, Landmark
Graphics, etc.
2. Edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config to turn on X11 Forwarding
        X11Forwarding yes
3. Restart the SSH daemon
This will allow you to start X applications on Linux/390, and have them
display on the X server on the workstation. Note that by doing this, you
will _not_ have to mess with the $DISPLAY environment variable. That will
be set by SSH when you connect after the daemon has been restarted.

If you want the full desktop scenario, then you'll need to do more. If you
haven't already, go to http://linuxvm.org/ and click on the link to the
"Distributions" Redbook at the top of the main page. Chapter 6.6 will tell
you what you need to get that going. The section was written for SuSE 7.0,
but it should still largely apply to SLES8.

Mark,

what I want to do is run KDE from Win NT or "A" workstation,
using obviously the less CPU used the better on z/VM. I am using
Putty as an SSH client, I believe you can turn on "tunneling" here,
I will have to dig or tunnel... a bit deeper. Your second
suggestion covered basically what we want.

Many thanks and regards,

John
