PIPE QSAM for CDL dataset(s)

Hey!
Anyone used PIPE QSAM to read one or more of the CDL datasets?
I get an error code 80,  "The file is an unsupported OS data set".
This is not surprising,  but it  *is*  highly disappointing.

Thoughts?
