Also, if you move a bunch of intel servers onto the faster intel server it
still probably still is being run at low or very low utilization and how
many customers would want to put that many eggs in basket that is has an
Intel server's reliability?

I wonder who in IBM made this statement!
IBM has no plans to begin running Linux performance
benchmarks for the mainframe, the IBM spokesman said.
"We typically don't run industry standard performance
benchmarks for any software on the mainframe," he
said. "The value of the mainframe is based on its
ability to securely run multiple applications on a
single platform as opposed to purely seeking
outstanding performance of one application on a single
platform."
He obviuosly does not understand the power of the
mainframe. IBM has always talked about throughput
rather than "performance" - elapsed time of any given
transaction and throughput.
The real questions are:
Could the zSeries give a the same or higher
transaction rate?
Hang a terabyte on the a zSeries 116 or 216, give it
64 GB memory, and see how much work you can put
through it. (The zSeries 116 or 216 is in the range of
the same clock rate).
How many Microsoft/Intel's would it take to do the
same work! And what would the cost/transaction be?
