Well, according to http://www-3.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/doc/v50/prereqs/hardware.htm the recommended amount of RAM is 512MB per server (plus the database server and the application, I suppose), so if you want to consolidate hundreds of websphere servers with VM, even the maximum of 256 GB in one z990 might just be the lower limit. IMHO, the choice is either consolidating hundreds of servers or using Java, i.e. many small or a few medium sized workloads. What you appearantly want to do is putting many medium sized workloads on a single machine. That doesn't sound like a good idea.
