For low speed links get a copy of tightvnc, that really seems to cut down the bandwidth nicely. At the university the computer society runs vnc + some scripts and gdm to provide a "desktop on demand" via tightvnc or the java tightvnc client. You just go to http://boxname/login.html and off it goes
