Its not a compression issue - that is automatic.

However, when a data set is deleted under MVS, a
message is sent to the RVA via the software IXFP which
gives the free space back. Then IXFP, every once in a
while, does a free space collection.

The question is, "Does the IXFP/MVS interface during
space collection recognize that the VTOC shows an
empty pack, therefore releasing the allocated backend space?"
