This terminology appears to be 'rampant' in proper Linux documents too.  A
quick search of those I have at hand turned up 30+ examples, e.g.,


Many coarse-grained applications can be implemented in a master/slave framework, where one process (usually the first process), the master process, doles out work to all of the other processes, called slaves. A single process or thread is usually associated with one real physical processor, but this is not a requirement.
