No doubt. But I just managed to get my SLES8 system without YaST to use
my ldap server. Once you have the packages like nss_ldap and pam_ldap on
the system, there's
/etc/openldap/ldap.conf
/etc/pam.d/
/etc/security/pam_unix2.conf
/etc/nsswitch.conf

The one that took me a lot of time is the style of nsswitch.conf where I
failed to remove the 'compat' lines under the 'files nis' sample lines.
