Just for the heck of it, I downloaded Nagios 1.1 onto my SLES8 test system.
It built just fine. You don't give any real information as to what errors
you encountered, so there's no way anyone can help you there. For the
compilations I ran, the only "gcc flags" that were used were some defines
and this:
-g -O2
Nothing terribly exotic, to say the least.
I'm also not sure what you mean by "hang" and "hung." Do you mean "takes
longer than I expected?" Or something like "it never finished, even though
I waited 5 days?" Have you ever fired up another SSH session to run top and
see what was going on?

Has anyone installed Nagios (http://www.nagios.org/) on SLES 8 ? When I
tried (no rpm, so ./configure etc.) , it croaked on some gcc flags and
hung. In fact many of my traditional installs seem to hang. However when I
installed the Perl MQSeries module, eventhough it hung, the install was
successful.
Anyway, I would like to hear from those using Nagios.
