Hi! This WinTel/Mainframe-article is a price/performance-only-comparison. Even with a transcendental tuning it would be hard to beat WinTel in such a kind of benchmark.
But did you notice, that the mainframe-costs are the same for 1 server and for 96 servers...? :) (I dont have the time to collect the costs for 96 WinTels and its buildup/administration at this point) By the way, it`s cheaper to take a chainsaw instead of a WinTel to fell a tree. Why is no chainsaw manufacturer starting an ad campaign with this fact? It everytime depends ... IO-Performance: Every fairy/rumor contains a bit of truth. On page 12 Figure 3 you can see, that the real process-cpu-usage is near 10 percent. rest is "system cpu". I noticed that on several linux systems in our environment. We had an SAP application server in test. Equipped with 6 processors and 8-12 G of RAM we were nearly equivalent to our runnning AIX-Servers. z/linux performance was lower, response time was higher, but both were tolerable. problems, of course: costs. You could sell it as "capacity on demand" for annual accounting runs. This require however a very special pricing from IBM for beeing competitive. But I noticed a weird "system-cpu-consuming" on high load on this machine. I startet xosview for visualizing processores and noticed, that beside this high "cpu in system mode" sometimes 1 or 2 cpu where 100% used completly for systems, durations about 20 secs. It seems, that linux and the software running on it is not yet really optimized for the z-platform. processors are waiting together with the processes for i/o, ressources etc.(?).. Structure of z/OS seems to be better with its JES and those initiators. Processes are completly swapped out when waiting for Ressources What about the Kernel 2.6? I heard about a better scheduling... regards Frank Schwede -----Ursprngliche Nachricht----- Von: Ceruti, Gerard G [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Gesendet: Mittwoch, 7.
