If you only need a couple of files, sure.  But when you're trying to install
an entire distribution?  Only if you've got a few GB of free space on your
/tmp file system.

How about just using scp?  It's much simpler.

e.g. on your ia32 Linux system, run:

scp <file-to-transfer> root@<ip-address-of-instance>:/tmp
