Apache built just fine, that wasn't the problem.

Using the SLES8 distributed Apache and Tomcat together produced the
message:

Syntax error on line 228 of /etc/httpd/httpd.conf:
Cannot load /usr/lib/apache/mod_jk2.so into server:
/usr/lib/apache/mod_jk2.so: undefined symbol: apr_thread_mutex_trylock
