David's got a great point. Again.

I've had similarly positive experiences with the Thinkpad/SuSE
combination. I'm running an A41 Thinkpad dual-booted with SuSE 8.2 and
Windows 2000. I find that I spend most of my time using the Linux
persona. Everything works - no fuss, no muss, no bother, even the
integrated wireless.

I hope this doesn't upset anybody. But I am considering
getting a Laptop. Of
course, I am only interested in one running Linux/Intel. But
most vendors
are "suggesting" Windows XP. I've only found a couple of Linux laptop
vendors (ASA Computers and EmperorLinux). And their prices are in the
"premium" range. It almost looks like it would be less
expensive to buy a
"normal" laptop and just install Linux myself.

It will be cheaper to do it yourself.

My suggestion:

Buy a refurb Thinkpad from IBM's store on eBay and put SuSE 9 on it. There
are a bunch of T2x class ones there at the moment, and the SuSE 9 package
has drivers for all the devices (even those bloody WinModems).

Works like a champ -- a T22 with decent disk, DVD drive, internal
modem/ethernet and 256M of RAM goes for about $400. I had no trouble with
the install; it recognized everthing perfectly (in fact this message is
being typed on it).
