Sounds like you might have had parameters going right up to column 80. That would have caused it to be "merged" with the parameter starting in column 1 of the next card. This is due to the way the cards are parsed, and is intended as a feature, since the amount of available card space is so limited. It allows continuations across card boundaries without chewing up columns with continuation characters.
