 z/VM Version 4 Release 4 Networking Choices
Moving from Guest LAN to Virtual Switch

  March 24, 2004
  2:30 pm EST (session #112469)
  http://www.vm.ibm.com/events/march24.html

Session Abstract:

Perhaps you have already implemented a Linux guest environment
using z/VM Version 4 Release 3, and are now preparing to move the
environment into production. As part of that process you are also
evaluating installation of z/VM Version 4 Release 4 (z/VM V4.4) and
wondering whether implementation of new z/VM 4.4 networking
capabilities would simplify the routed Guest LAN network you
previously implemented. This presentation will begin with an
overview of guest networking alternatives provided with both
z/VM 4.3 and z/VM 4.4, then focus on comparing Guest LANs with
z/VM virtual switches. In addition, the presentation will cover
the steps necessary to implement a z/vM virtual switch, and why
you might choose one over the other. There will be a Question
and Answer session following the presentation.

Featured Speaker:

Our featured speaker is Richard Lewis. Richard is completing his
20th year with IBM. During this time he has worked as a VM System
Programmer, maintaining several large internal IBM VM systems. Over
the last 14 years, Richard has been a member of the Washington
System Center Advanced Technical Support organization, supporting
both z/VM and Linux. As member of the Washington System Center,
Richard works closely with z/VM development, IBM customers and
IBM Field Technical Specialists providing instruction on z/VM and
Linux topics, as well as assisting in the resolution of technical
problems. Richard has been working with Linux in an Intel environment
for over 4 years, and has worked with the s/390 and zSeries port
of Linux since its beginning. Richard was a member of the team that
implemented the Linux Community Development System, an IBM mainframe
on the Internet supporting independent Open Source developers
of Linux software. During his career Richard has also been very active
at SHARE as both a presenter, and IBM Representative to the VM and
Linux project.
