I have not looked at the latest version of the installer, but I believe that both SuSE and Red Hat installers refuse to use disks that are not in the CDL format. While I do believe the diagnose driver has more potential to provide an efficient I/O interface on z/VM, the diagnose driver does not support the partitioning that the installers want to do. People have outlined how to do dasdfmt from Linux while the installer is waiting on the other session. You could also pick up CMS2CDL from the VM Download page.
