Actually, Blue Gene is neither a new sort of machine nor a mainframe. It
is essentially a very large "Scalable Parallel" (from around 1992) machine
using Linux and Intel instead of AIX and Power. Thus it is a new sort of
SP. I think using it as the example of big iron causes the article to
miss the point. Linux on z, USS, Java on z, and z with tcp/ip networking
are the types of things that make the "new mainframe". System structure,
RAS and LPARs on p690 are much better non z examples than Blue Gene. They
did get the size right though; Blue Gene is "Big Iron".

Absolute twaddle.
System/360 was the world's first open system. Principles of Operation and
the Channel OEMI
manuals permitted plug compatibility - OS/360 was public domain and the
source code was freely
available from IBM for the cost of the tapes.
Open source was, if you like, the reason for System/360's initial success.
And, IMO, OCO is
one of the reasons for its decline.
And the article clearly implies that Blue Gene is the "new" sort of
mainframe, with the "old"
sort headed for extinction. Hmm. Not according to what I'm hearing about
IBM's plans.
